How It Works

The Science Behind the Score

Our tool uses the widely respected Flesch-Kincaid readability formulas. Here is a step-by-step breakdown of how the tool analyzes your text:

  1. Text Parsing: When you paste text, our JavaScript engine instantly breaks it down into paragraphs, sentences, words, and characters.
  2. Syllable Counting: We use an algorithmic approach to estimate the number of syllables in every word, adjusting for common English language rules and exceptions.
  3. Formula Calculation: We apply the Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formulas using the data gathered in the previous steps.
  4. Highlighting: A secondary pass scans the text for long sentences (20+ words), very long sentences (30+ words), complex vocabulary (3+ syllables), and passive voice structures.

Because all of this processing occurs in your browser using modern Web APIs, it happens almost instantaneously, even for documents up to 20,000 characters.
